L. Runeberg<\/a>’s The Tales of Ensign St\u00e5l<\/a><\/i> and Aleksis Kivi<\/a>’s The Seven Brothers<\/a><\/i>.[4]<\/a>[5]<\/a>[6]<\/a><\/sup> The Kalevala<\/i> was instrumental in the development of the Finnish<\/a> national identity<\/a> and the intensification of Finland’s language strife<\/a> that ultimately led to Finland’s independence from Russia<\/a> in 1917.[7]<\/a>[8]<\/a><\/sup> The work is also well known internationally and has partly influenced, for example, J. R. R. Tolkien<\/a>’s legendarium<\/a> (i.e. Middle-earth<\/a> mythology).[9]<\/a>[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n The first version of the Kalevala<\/i>, called the Old Kalevala<\/i>, was published in 1835, consisting of 12,078 verses.
